One important part of bodybuilding is the development of the shoulders. You will look great just standing there, and you will look even better when you strike a double-back bicep pose. If you develop your side deltoids in proportion to the biceps, the arms and biceps look large and well defined.

Your shoulder is composed by the posterior, medial, and anterior deltoid muscles. If you include the entire shoulder girdle, then it also consists of the muscles of the rotator cuff and the upper trapezius.

To the back, side, or front of the humerus, the deep rotator cuff muscles connect several parts of the thoracic region. Upper trapezius muscles are the muscles that run from the back of the neck; extend to the medial deltoid, then downward to intersect with the middle trapezius. Going further back on the shoulder, below the lower portion of the upper trapezius, is the posterior deltoid muscle. The outer section of the shoulder is the location of the medial deltoid, while the anterior deltoid muscle is apparent on the exterior of the pectoral muscles.

When lifting the arm, each shoulder performs a different, and specific, function. The anterior deltoid is responsible for bringing the arm forward, inward and for rotating the arm. The medial deltoid allows the arm to move away from the side. When the arm goes back the posterior deltoid will come into play. When the scapula is moved upward toward the ears, like shrugging your shoulders, the upper trapezius muscle does the job. Finally, the rotator cuff muscles secure the arm as it moves and permit its rotation.

To build up the shoulder muscles, exercises such as the military press, Arnold press, lateral raises (bent-over, lying, or standard), and neck/behind-the neck presses, should be performed. Rowing in an upright position as well as while bent over will facilitate building the shoulder area to dramatic size.

Indicative to building massive shoulders is the knowlege of how they work and are kept healthy. Injuries can quickly slam the brakes on any progress you are making, so take extra care to avoid them. One of the most common injuries is to the rotator cuff muscles. Rotator cuff muscles are not particularly large or strong muscles. Try to prevent injuries by including some band work into your shoulder exercises.

To minimize injuries be sure that you are using the right amount of weight. You should be able to have control of the weight through the entire movement. If you find that you can only do partial reps or you need to shift the weight around, then the weight is too heavy. Using too much weight puts too much stress on the shoulder and is likely to cause injury. Be sure that you can maintain the proper technique and use the full range of motion before increasing the weight.

Although building up shoulder muscles takes a bit of effort, bodybuilders concur that the result justifies the work involved. Because each body grows at its own rate, research and patience are vital.

Principles of Inheritance Patterns

In the 1800s, an Austrian Monk named Gregor Mendel first began performing breeding experiments using garden-variety pea plants. His studies earned him the nickname the father of genetics and his findings laid important groundwork for modern rules of inheritance patterns.

The work of Gregor Mendel established fundamental rules for patterns of inheritance. The principles of genotypes and phenotypes must first be understood before mastering Mendel’s rules. Although unfamiliar, these terms have a simple explanation.

A phenotype is merely how a gene is expressed. For instance, a dimpled chin is an example of a trait that is governed by genetics. Your phenotype is determined by whether or not you have a dimple in your chin. If you have a dimpled chin, you express the trait. By the way, this means the trait is dominant. A recessive trait, no dimpled chin for instance, is one in which the trait is hidden; hence, the term recessive.

Conversely, a genotype is the full genetic information of an individual. So this means a genotype represents both of copies of the gene for a particular trait. Remember, everyone inherits two copies of a gene — one is from each parent.

Dominance rules in patterns of inheritance are pretty straightforward. If an individual inherits two recessive alleles, the trait will always be hidden or masked. This individual would be considered a recessive homozygote.

Recessive alleles are normally written out in lowercase letters. For example, if we indicate the trait for dimpled chin with a lowercase letter d, then a person who inherits two copies of the recessive allele, one from each parent, will have the genotype of dd. Again, this individual would be considered homozygous recessive.

Accordingly, if a person receives two copies of a dominant allele, the trait will always be expressed. The expression of two dominant alleles is termed homozygous dominant. Dominant alleles are typically indicated by, you guessed it, capital letters; thus, an individual who has two dominant alleles, DD, for the dimpled chin trait will absolutely have a dimpled chin.

Then what if a person inherits one dominant allele and one recessive allele — the genotype of Dd? This would mean they are heterozygous; therefore, they will always express the trait. The reasoning behind this is that dominant alleles are just that — dominant. Even if inherited alongside a recessive allele, a dominant trait will inevitably be expressed.

Another interesting point on recessive alleles and traits is that they are more significant than merely being hidden. In some cases, two copies of a recessive allele can mean that a person will inherit a genetic disease. Some commonly known recessive inherited diseases are Cystic Fibrosis, Sickle Cell Anemia, and Tay Sachs.

These examples are known as autosomal disorders, or diseases linked to the 22 pairs of chromosomes that do not determine gender. Also interesting is that there are dominant inherited disorders which are highly lethal and X- or Y-linked disorders related to mutations in genes located on our sex-determining chromosomes.

Blood type is a special type of inherited trait that is governed by multiple alleles, or gene variants. Most often referred to as the ABO blood group, these three alleles, A, B, and O, can produce four phenotypes from six genotypes. Of the three possible alleles, A and B are always dominant to O.

In addition, A and B are codominant; this means if inherited together, both alleles will be expressed. Like any other inherited trait, only one allele will be donated from each parent. Possible combinations are AA, AO, BB, BO, AB, and OO. Resulting phenotypes are type A blood for AA and AO genotypes, type B blood for BB and BO genotypes, type AB blood for the AB genotype, and type O blood for the OO genotype.

Exercise to Build Muscle, Without Pain!

How can someone exercise to build muscle, but do it without feeling the aches and pains after?

In this article, I have gone through a couple methods that can be added to your workout. They will shorten your workout time, give you a well rounded workout, and also help you build muscle stronger.

Most of these concepts are related to basic knowledge of working out, however they must be incorporated in to your work out, or you will still feel the burn.

You really need to keep your workouts short. The first hour of your workout is the best to build muscle as you have fresh energy and oxygen in your blood. This means, try to get your workouts done within the first hour. Your workouts don’t have to be long to be significant. After an hour, your body will start to develop lactic acid, which can be harmful to your muscle building and is known to produce the pain and soreness you feel later on.

With this in mind, you must be able to get more done, and faster, than usual. You need to make whatever you do, worth your time. Lifting 80-85% of your one rep max is crucial. This is a good weight for high resistance, which will cut back your exercise’s total time.

You need to use fewer reps and sets, about 3-5 each, with this larger amount of weight. This means more weight in less time! You will see many more benefits from this, rather than from the slow workouts with low weight, with high rep and set counts.

Although compound exercises are found in the weight room, don’t be discouraged if you want to work out at home first before spending money on a gym membership or work out equipment. There are exercises to build muscle you can perform without spending any money. Push ups, pull ups, chin ups, and mountain climbers are just a few, well known, exercises that can get you started.

If you choose to use these concepts in your workout, you will see a decrease in total time for your workout.

A shorter time while you exercise to build muscle will still be beneficial, as long as you are lifting a good amount of weight and performing exercises that work many muscles at once.
